I think if D2R was announced when Immortal was and Immortal followed in the next Blizzcon, the community would be much more accepting of Immortal. Immortal was the correct in between choice. Plus D4 is on the horizon and story wise, they would need to tread carefully. An expansion would be very difficult to properly balance in the game. What would you add to D3 for content?
